Definition and origin

The Pacte Industrial de la Regió Metropolitana de Barcelona is a regional association made up of town councils, trade unions, business organisations and a wide range of institutions and bodies linked to economic development and the promotion of employment.

The association was set up towards the end of 1997, the result of an initiative which arose from the Pla Estratègic Metropolità, at that time called the Pla Estratègic Barcelona 2000, with the aim of bringing together, for work and debate, the main agents involved in the economy, training and employment in the metropolitan region.

Its origin is also in line with European Union proposals, all of them concerning the consideration of the regional framework as the most suitable for the application of employment policies and the fostering of a regional structure that is closely linked to economic growth and innovation.
